Digital Storytelling

The Freshwater Lab delivers urgent information and accounts of lived experiences to the public through its free digital platforms.  To produce them, we conduct research in and with communities and co-create interactive features.

The Backward River

The Backward River digital storytelling site explores the histories, characters, and possible futures of the Chicago River, the only river in the world trained to run backward.  Its short narratives, audio clips, and images guide visitors through mammoth infrastructure, contemporary issues, and practical steps toward a healthier ecosystem.

Freshwater Stories

Freshwater Stories reflects trips around Lake Michigan, research workshops with a wide range of lakefront communities, and extensive dialogue.  Along with vital information about lead pipes, dead zones, environmental justice, and more, the website offers a set of activities to help people (wherever they live) learn more about their water systems.
